One of the biggest culprits in freezing weather is condensation. Regardless of the cover used, periodically check areas of the RV that receive minimal circulation for signs of condensation. If condensation is found, the use of an an air circulating fan will help in eliminating this when used on warmer days.

As you get ready to store your RV for the long Alaskan winter, keep in mind these important storage tips that will prevent problems when the spring camping season kicks in:

  • Begin with a through washing and waxing of your RV to remove road grime and prevent excessive dust or dirt buildup over the winter.
  • Cover your windshield with an exterior windshield cover.
  • Disconnect and remove the batteries and store them inside where they will not freeze.
  • Use pads under the tires to park your on to prevent sinking into soft spots during the freeze and thaw cycles of an Alaskan winter.
  • Turn off pilot lights and turn off the propane at the source.
  • Drain all water from your rig including hot and fresh water tanks.
  • Blow out all hot and cold water lines prior to running RV antifreeze through the system.
  • Turn the refrigerator off, defrost and wipe it dry. Leave the door propped open a little bit so air can circulate. Do this or mold will grow possibly ruining the refrigerator.
  • Seal all outside openings to prevent critters from taking up residence inside.
  • Use a breathable cover to avoid condensation forming between the cover and RV, or park it inside a garage or at a covered RV storage facility.

A few hours of preparation can save you a huge amount of hassle in the long run come spring and will get you back to camping as soon as the summer camping season returns.
